Top Tips for Your First Family Holiday Abroad

8:57 PM

Deciding to go abroad together for the first time is an important milestone in the life of any young family. While our home countries offer plenty of places to see and lots of activities to do, there is a big world out there and there are some tremendous benefits to allowing our children to experience it. With proper planning, you can even take your babies and infants away to properly experience new places even though they might not always remember it when they get older. If you are thinking that your children are old enough to take abroad for the first time, here are some of the things you need to know.

Plan the Destination Around Your Children
If it is going to be your children’s first flight, long-haul is not going to be the best option. They may end up cranky and unable to concentrate and, depending on their age, they might not understand why they are confined within the plane. Instead, you should try to choose something which is maybe no more than a two-hour flight away.
You also need to think about the style of holiday you would like to have. Some people like to use their holidays on city-breaks but this isn’t always the best option for small children. Big cities will have lots of things for children to do but they might get easily worn out by the amount of walking they have to do. There is also a big risk that they won’t find the attractions you visit interesting. Cranky, overstimulated kids can quickly ruin the holiday for everyone.
When your children are really little, it might be a better decision to visit somewhere with a beach or a pool. They can chill out and have some fun in the sun and you can relax for a little while and enjoy the sun. A relaxed week or two in the sun might prove to be the much better option rather than something educational.
Master Airport Parking
The airport can often be stressful even for people without children. If you always find it to be difficult to get through, you need to make sure that you have an action plan. This is the case whether you are flying through a big hub or somewhere smaller like Luton.
If you are flying through Luton then one of the best things you can do is take a look at official parking at Luton airport. These are some great options for parking as they allow you to take your own car without the stress of trying to find a good parking space. Luton Parkingmakes everything super simple. All you need to do is drop off your car at one of the designated parking zones and it will be taken away and parked somewhere safe and secure. When you get back to the UK, it will be returned to you. Taking advantage of Luton airport parking schemes like this allows you to unload all of your family right at the terminal without the worry of dragging children and luggage over there. If you always struggle to find the right parking space, take a look at what this parking could do for you.
Prepare for Departures Too
Waiting for the plane to leave can seem like an eternity, especially if you have small children who get bored easily. You need to make sure that you can easily take care of any need they might have with minimal effort. One of the first things you should do is make sure that you have a spare change of clothes for each of them. If they then spill something on themselves accidentally, you will be able to get them changed.
Make sure you have enough water for each of them. You can’t take water through security but you can take an empty bottle. Once on the other side, there is always going to be a water fountain you can fill up from. This will be much more cost-effective than trying to buy a new water bottle for each of them from an expensive airport kiosk.
If you are taking electronics like a tablet to keep them entertained on the plane, make sure you have the chargers too. There might not be a charger point on board but there will be in the terminal. If they want to sit and play their games before they get on the plane, explain they need to use the charger or risk their electronics going dead.
Bring Snacks They Like and Recognise
Children are fickle things. Even if you are giving them exactly the same snack they usually enjoy at home, if the packaging is even slightly different then they may decide they don’t like it. To avoid this problem, make sure you pack enough snacks for them to enjoy. Make sure to find out what the import rules are for the country you are visiting; you don’t want to accidentally bring in something you can’t.
These extra snacks might also prove handy if your children don’t like the local cuisine. For example, if you were to visit the Algarve in Portugal, you might decide that you want to indulge in some of the local seafood dishes. Not many small children like seafood and they might turn their noses up at what is offered on the kids’ menu of the restaurant. If you have some snacks from home on you, you at least know they will eat something.

Spread Your Packing Around
When you are packing suitcases, it can be incredibly easy to pack parent’s clothes into one and children’s clothes into another. This system is fine until one of the suitcases gets lost in the baggage system and someone is left without clothes for two weeks. It can be incredibly expensive to go to the shops and replace an entire holiday’s worth of clothes; even if it is just for one person and even if you shop somewhere budget.
Instead, make sure that pack a few pieces of everyone’s clothes in each of the suitcases. If you can equally divide the clothing between each of the cases you are taking with you, you will hopefully ensure that everyone has at least one outfit they can wear. If you are at all worried about potentially losing a suitcase, this is the easiest way for you to protect yourself from it happening.
Get Your Children to Help
This is likely to be one of the first big family holidays you will ever go on so you should make sure that your children get input at all times. From places you could go to what ice cream flavour they would like to eat, there are many ways to make your children feel included in decisions.
Most of all, you need to remember to have fun. No matter where you are going and what you are doing, you are going to have an amazing holiday. If you make sure that you have as much fun as possible, this will be a holiday which all of you can treasure no matter what happens. Plan early, take everything into consideration, and get ready to relax! The perfect holiday is right around the corner!
