My most memorable Thanksgiving was also the smallest one Ive ever had. It was the Thanksgiving right after the divorce and the last time I saw my dad, as a child. I was seven years old. My mom, a newly single parent with four children, one of which was a sickly three month old baby just home from the NICU, prepared the impressive feast. I remember my beautiful mother slaving all day in our little basement apartment while wearing her Sunday best. (Because you always wear your Sunday best to special dinners like Thanksgiving.) Looking back I never realized just how incredible that moment was. We had no special guest coming or extended family members. This Thanksgiving feast she was working tirelessly on was just for her four children all under the age of nine. I probably would have just gone to Chuck-O-Rama. You would have never known by the way she danced while making the mashed potatoes that this woman was going through one of the hardest years of her life. She was not going to let her tragedies ruin Thanksgiving as well. Despite all the heart ache surrounding us at that time that was a very happy Thanksgiving.


I now have four children of my own and a very loving husband. This year we aren't able to go out of town to be with extended family like we are used to and its been hard to get excited about cooking all day for the same people I see at the dinner table every night. Then I starting think about my mother today and how she did it all those years ago. As I picture my young mother preparing an elaborate feast just for her four small children I can't help but be filled with a little more gratitude for my own little family.  I am so grateful for the life I have been blessed with and the example of a mother that knew how to carve out little moments of light in all of the darkness. She wasn't perfect but she was amazing. And even though she passed away when I was a teenager her example and love live through me. Im so eternaly grateful for the sixteen Thanksgivings I did get to spend with her and hope that I can bring some of that love and light to the dinner table this Thursday.
